![]() In the winter of 1969, eighteen B-25s were gathered on a custom-built airstrip located near the town of Guaymas on the Gulf of California (also called the Sea of Cortez) coast in the Mexican state of Sonora. It would seem the stars lined up right in 1969, at least for the North American B-25 Mitchell, the infant warbird movement, and the aviation movie world. Tallmantz Aviation and the Making of Catch-22 One of Stoney's great aerial shots over the Sea of Cortez, this one showing N9115Z (6M), N9456Z (6C), and camera ship N1203 (6A) in a stepped formation. It was buried at Guaymas when the airfield was cleaned up after the shooting was completed. The sequence was reportedly shot several times and XB-HEY was a burnt out hulk by the end of the filming. ![]() The aftermath of the above scene, showing the fire crew putting out the fire surrounding XB-HEY. From what can be determined, neither airplane carried names as they only appeared in the film in the distant background of group shots, though N1042B carried some distinctive nose art. One of the two camera planes was N1042B, shown here with Frank Tallman in the cockpit. The studio technicians were thorough in their scene preparations. The small overwing windows are a giveaway that this is XB-HEY, and other details also match. Watching the film, it can be discerned that this scene was shot in two sections as XB-HEY appears as the crashed and burning B-25 in one part of the scene, and then as this hulk in the other.
